Navis Mysterium – underwater winery in Croatia

Here’s yet another reason to visit Croatia! The underwater winery named Navis Mysterium. Read about this unique story and get inspired.
Drače, a small village between Ston and Orebić, in the central part of the Pelješac peninsula, is the place where the unique story of Navis Mysterium begins. If you’re a bit into wine, you have definitely heard of Pelješac wines, among them also of Dingač, known as the king of Croatian wines.

It was back in 2011, when Edivo bottled their first wine and decided to make it unique. They thought of an idea of immersing bottles and amphorae under the sea. It took them two years to find the best spot and check if this is possible at all. While storing bottles underwater presented no problem and immediately brought great results, amphorae were far more difficult. They needed to check, whether it is possible to put glass bottle directly into the amphora. And they did it: they placed a glass bottle of 0.75L into a clay amphora, protected it with a good-quality cork and two layers of rubber, submerged it into the sea, to a depth of 18-25 meters, and left it there for more than 700 days.

After they raised the bottle from the sea, they immediately knew that this is going to be something really special. They named the project Navis Mysterium, took a concession on an old sunken fishing boat that had been lying on the seabed for more than 30 years and opened the first underwater winery in Croatia.
