If we said that Olomouc is one of the highlights in Czech Republic, we’d lie. The town is practically unknown outside the Czech Republic and if we did not have a big fan at our Happy Tours office, we also wouldn’t pay attention to it. But now we do.
And we only regret that somebody did not tell us about this hidden gem before. It is pristine, unique and totally intertwined with its rich history. It is something we now put on our bucket list and encourage our guests to visit while in Czech Republic. It is countries best kept secret and once you explore you get to see why. Best things are always hidden.
The town is often referred to as Little Prague, as it boasts a great number of historical and cultural sites – similar to Prague, with the advantage being that they are not overcrowded yet.
We won’t go into details with the rich history of the town, here, we’ll rather talk about cheese, Mozart, cats and world’s most beautiful hospital.
Say cheese!
Olomoucký sýr or tvarůžky is reputedly the smelliest in the Czech Republic. What’s special about it, is the fact that it pairs well with beer (not wine!). It has a strong scent and a specific flavour, but it’s really worth trying it. There is also a Cheese Museum about 30 minutes outside of Olomouc, but if you’re lacking the time, there are plenty of places within the city where you can taste it. In fact, you can even purchase it at a vending machine. Now, how cool is that?
Mozart rocked it here
Who would have thought that Mozart can be associated with Olomouc? The thing with Mozart and the Czech Republic is big – there are many connections, but still: his star shone at brightest when he was in Olomouc, at the age of 11. Back then Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the brilliant Austrian composer and pianist composed Symphony No. 6 in F major during his stay in the Hauenschild’s Palace and later in the Cathedral’s Deanery.
A cat café? Seriously? Yes, you got that right.
Olomouc is trendy and young at heart. Apart from trendy bars (no wonder, it’s a university city) this is also shown by the fact that they have their very own cat café named CoffeeCat, the latest global craze. And Olomouc is all in. So, while enjoying tea and biscuits you can happily pet a cat and feel like home. Cosiness at its best, isn’t it?
World’s most beautiful hospital
The Czech Republic’s oldest military hospital, which is still in use today, dates back to as early as 1078. Beautiful Baroque exterior and interior make it one f the most beautiful hospitals we have ever encountered. One would have thought that one has entered an art gallery or a museum, but it’s actually one of the two hospitals in the area. You can admire it from the outside or at least peek inside and check out all those details that make it special.
If the above stated hasn’t convinced you to visit Olomouc, we don’t resent you. We’d rather if it stays a secret… But if you decided to put in on your bucket list, we think it’s the only right way to visit it with Happy Tours. And we’ll have our biggest fan of the town prepare the itinerary for you. Get ready for some cheese and cats!
