1 – Seegrotte, near HinterbrühlSeegrotte is an underground cave system of an old gypsum mine, and it is considered one of the most spectacular natural monuments in the world. After an underground blasting explosion that went wrong and flooded the lower galleries with 20 million litres of water in 1912, the mine was closed until a group of international cave explorers discovered that with the explosion, Europe’s largest subterranean lake was created. Since their discovery, Seegrotte stayed open for most of the time as a popular tourist attraction since the 1930’s, and people can tour the caves or take a boat ride across the underground lake.

Not so far away from Vienna, guests can go on a boat ride down the Danube River and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Unesco-listed Wachau Valley. This part of the Austrian countryside offers many treats for the eyes with its castles, vineyards, abbeys and cute villages. Before returning back to Vienna, guests may also want to visit the spectacular Benedictine Melk Abbey and pause to take some great pictures.
